Enrichment
Students of all ages love to be challenged! I will do my best to use my bag of tricks to keep your child challenged by offering plenty of opportunities for personal exploration. Conversely, I am committed to making early interventions when I see that there is a gap in your child's learning or that goals are not being met as expected. If that is the case I will expect parents to support such interventions and reinforce any modifications at home as well as at school. Here are some of the ways that I offer enrichment opportunities to all students:
Scientist of the Week
Each week, 1-2 students will choose and perform a science experiment of their choice for the rest of the class. Students are able to explore a topic that interests them, therefore they are more interested in the process. Please click here for more information. Special Projects
Starting in second trimester, students are welcome to explore a topic of their choice. Special Projects are designed by the students themselves to allow the freedom to research a topic they would like to know more about this year. Proposals must be approved* by me before students may begin their research as I will help students to 1) determine what they want to find out, making sure they haven't chosen something too broad or so specific there is limited information, and 2) to set goals to make sure they are able to complete it in the amount of time they have selected. I would like all students to complete at least one by the end of the school year. Previous topics studied by other students: famous people in history (sports figures, Neil Armstrong, George Washington), animals, planets, natural disasters, and many more. Some students have expressed interest in conducting an additional science project for the class, this would be a terrific idea and students would not be required to create another display board for this unless they chose to do so. To complete the proposal from home, clink on the link below to download the form.
*Approval is also based on classroom/homework performance. If students are falling behind in either of these areas, I cannot allow them to work on a Special Project until their other performance has improved as those are their first priority.

50 Book Reading Club
For 3rd Trimester, students will have the opportunity to hone their reading skills while setting and meeting goals before the year is up. All students are invited to be a part of this club by reading books (there are some stipulations about the specific kinds of books) and turning in the paperwork to Ms. Raja by a set date. Aside from selecting books from specific genres to read, there are no rules and all of the reading counts towards regular reading minutes! This really isn't something extra or in addition to homework, but those who participate do get to celebrate their accomplishment together!
